Aurora towns in Canada

Answer

Glow tracks 181 towns in Canada, 130 with their own indexed page. On the IGRF-14 dipole they run from Yellowknife at 68.5° to Norfolk County at 51.9°, with a median of 55.3 degrees geomagnetic. Among the 13 countries with a Glow hub, that median ranks 10th.

Of the 130 indexed towns in Canada, 8 sit at 60 degrees geomagnetic or more, in or poleward of SWPC's 60 to 75 degree band, where no storm is needed; 71 sit between 55 and 60 degrees, where G1 (Kp 5) or less usually brings aurora into view; 51 sit below 55 degrees and need a G2 or stronger storm by NOAA's typical latitudes.

Darkness and cloud

On December 15 the median town gets 14.2 hours of civil night. Yellowknife has the most at 16.6 hours and Burlington the least at 13.8. 2 of these towns lose civil darkness altogether around the June solstice; Yellowknife goes longest, 53 nights.

NASA POWER's 2001 to 2020 climatology puts median cloud amount in the dark months at 67%. Brandon is clearest at 59% and Terrace cloudiest at 79%. These are all-hours averages for 1 degree cells, not forecasts.

Best month, town by town

Multiplying civil night by the clear share of the sky, September comes out best for 75 of the 130 towns and January for 30. SWPC notes a tendency toward larger storms near the equinoxes, which this score does not include.
